We are delighted that Abiy Ahmed the Prime Minister has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Since his term started in 2018 Dr Abiy has transformed Ethiopian society. Not only has he negotiated the end of the long running war with Eritrea, but he has released political prisoners, appointed women to governement, and ended long lasting schisms in both the Orthodox Church and Muslim community. Economic growth is being maintained.
However there are unintended consequences. As political leaders are released so radical groups are re-emerging and inter ethnic violence is on the incease. There are over 2.5 million Internally Displaced Persons driven from their homes by violence.
Ethiopia is still facing huge challenges.
It is the second largest country in Africa with a population of 112 million.
31 million (or 28% of the population) are under the age of 10.
42 million (or 39%) are living below the absolute poverty line of $1 a day.
HIV/AIDS is in the increase, with about 60,000 children living with HIV.
We are setting up new projects. Among them……
We are working with UNESCO and government departments to build a new social safety net tom protect the most vulnerable.
We are working with the Office of the First Lady on a new project to help commercial sex workers to find new forms of income and reintegrate into their communities.
We are working in Internally Displaced Persons camps in Hawassa and Debre Zeit to provide water, build low-cost homes, and care for children.
WE ARE EXCITED ABOUT THE FUTURE AND HONOURED TO WORK WITH DR ABIY AND THE GOVERNMENT TO BUILD THE NEW ETHIOPIA
